If you have been attacked by a dog in a public place, we advise that you take the following steps to increase your chances of a successful compensation claim:

• Identify the owner of the dog and if possible take their name, address and telephone number

• Report the attack to the police

• Take details of any eyewitnesses

• Find out if the dog has a history of violence or aggression, and contact your local dog warden

• Take photographs of your injury straight away as well as photographs of any subsequent bruising and scarring

Often, dog owners will not have any insurance to cover any injuries their dog may cause, in this case we may have to pursue a claim through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).
