In terms of the different potential punishments and penalties for robbery, theft and burglary, there is quite a range, depending on the individual circumstances of each case. The maximum sentences include:

  • Up to seven years in prison for theft

  • Up to a life sentence for robbery

  • Up to 14 years in prison for domestic burglary (of a dwelling)

  • Up to 10 years in prison for non-domestic burglary (e.g. a shop)

  • Up to a life sentence for aggravated burglary (where at the time of committing a burglary a person had in their possession an offensive weapon)
